Early Years Unit

At Rothbury First School we have an Early Years Unit. The Turtle Class are our Nursery and Reception children learning and playing together.

We currently have places for 30 children, We are able to provide 30 funded hours for those who are eligible and for those who are not we can provide some extra sessions at a cost.

The Unit is housed across two large indoor areas which offer a range of spaces for a variety of activities. We have direct access to a fenced outdoor play area, and we have our own dedicated wooded area attached to the outdoor play area.

Our Early Years curriculum takes full account of the Foundation Stage for 3 to 5 year olds with the prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

and the specific areas through which the prime areas are strengthened and applied are;

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Fun and enjoyment are very important in the education of under fives. Activities are carefully planned to provide the children with opportunities to develop the concepts, skills and knowledge which will form a firm foundation for later learning and transition into Key Stage 1 and the National Curriculum.
